When the deeper layers of the skin are damaged, the body triggers collagen production to create scar tissue to heal the wound. Normal scars on the skin stay within the borders of the wound and eventually become flat with the surrounding tissue. Abnormal scar tissue growth caused by excessive collagen production can create a raised scar that grows outside the wound border, a growth called a keloid. At MJR Dermatology, we provide keloid treatment at our medical center in Lawrenceville, GA.
Keloid scars occur when the body continues to make scar tissue long after the wound to the skin is healed. Keloids can occur from almost any wound, from an ear piercing to a surgical incision. Keloids are more common on the ears, face and torso, but it is possible to have a keloid anywhere on the body. Some of the symptoms of keloids include:
- Scar tissue growing beyond the borders of the wound
- Raised scar that is brown, purplish or darker in color
- A rubbery texture
- Hairless, shiny surface
- Itchy skin
Keloids are more common in young adults. Those assigned male at birth are at higher risk for keloids, as well as those with darker skin color. However, keloids can occur with any gender or skin color. These scar formations can continue to grow to enormous sizes if treatment is not obtained.
Removing Keloid Scars
Keloid removal is not as simple as surgical removal of excess scar tissue. In most cases, removing the scar tissue alone will result in another keloid forming, sometimes larger and more aggressive than the first. Keloid treatment is needed to help prevent new keloids from forming. Treatment plans may include surgical scar revision combined with steroid injections, medications and other therapies to prevent a new keloid scar.
