Seborrheic Keratosis Treatment

There are many skin growths and lesions that may appear on your skin, especially as you get older. One of the more common skin growths in older adults is seborrheic keratosis, benign growths that can resemble moles or warts. These skin growths are not related to skin cancer and do not pose a health risk, but they can be cosmetically undesirable or cause discomfort. At MJR Dermatology, we offer seborrheic keratosis treatment at our facility in the North Atlanta area in Lawrenceville, GA.

Causes and Symptoms of Seborrheic Keratosis

Like many skin conditions, the exact cause of seborrheic is not known. These growths tend to run in families – if your parents had these skin growths when they got older, there is a good chance you may experience them once you are in your 50s or older. The growth appears slowly, becoming larger over time. They tend to appear on the scalp, face, back and chest, but they can grow anywhere on the body. Symptoms of seborrheic keratosis include:

  • Waxy or scaly raised bumps on the skin
  • Growths tend to be brown, gray or tan in color
  • Oval or round in shape
  • Itchy
  • Flat bumps range from very small to over an inch in diameter
  • Seborrheic keratosis growths tend to appear in clusters

If you have one seborrheic keratosis growth appear, there is a good chance more will follow with age. These skin growths do not need treatment, as they are not precancerous, but they can be itchy and uncomfortable, as well as unattractive.
