Shingles Treatment

If you had chicken pox at any point in your life, the varicella-zoster virus is still inside you and could cause shingles. This painful skin condition can occur at any time, but it is more common in older adults. If you have symptoms of shingles, you should see a dermatologist right away to explore treatment options that can reduce the discomfort and length of your outbreak. At MJR Dermatology, we offer shingles treatment at our medical center in Lawrenceville, GA.

Shingles Symptoms

The varicella-zoster virus can be dormant for decades before it causes a shingles outbreak. Many people under 40 years of age received the chicken pox vaccine as a child and may never get chicken pox or shingles, but this vaccine was not available until 1995. Anyone born before that time was likely exposed to chicken pox and has the virus lingering within their body.

Shingles usually occurs when the immune system is weak, allowing the virus to come out of dormancy. Older adults have a weaker immune system, but anyone with the virus can experience shingles. Stress, illness and other factors can increase your risk of a shingles outbreak. The symptoms include:

  • Tingling or itchy sensation in the days before the outbreak
  • Blistering rash on one side of the body, usually on the torso or face
  • Intense nerve pain
  • Blisters ooze and crust over
  • Symptoms can last for 2-3 weeks or longer

Shingles can be mild to excruciating. Some people have difficulty sleeping or concentrating during the outbreak. Shingles can also affect your vision, if blisters occur near the eyes. Pain medications are often ineffective in controlling discomfort, which is why early treatment is the best option.

Relief for Shingles

There are medications that can be used to reduce the pain and length of shingles outbreaks. These medications are the most effective when taken within the first few days of the flare up. If you have an itchy or painful rash on one side of your body and you believe it may be shingles, contact us right away at MJR Dermatology to schedule a visit.

There are vaccines for chicken pox and shingles, which can help prevent these uncomfortable skin diseases. However, if you do experience a shingles outbreak, there are ways to shorten your illness and minimize your discomfort. Contact us at MJR Dermatology if you need shingles treatment or symptom relief.
