Plaque psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that affects an estimated 3% of the population. It occurs when the body produces too many skin cells at once, creating “plaques” that appear on the skin. Psoriasis can be mild to severe, coming in waves throughout the patient’s lifetime. At MJR Dermatology, we offer innovative psoriasis treatment plans for our patients at our state-of-the-art medical center in Lawrenceville, GA.
Psoriasis is a group of skin diseases, with plaque psoriasis being the most common. The exact cause of psoriasis is not known, but like many skin conditions, an adverse immune reaction is to blame. Genetic and environmental factors can contribute to psoriasis outbreaks – you may be predisposed to psoriasis but go for years without a flare up until an environmental trigger causes an outbreak.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
There are different symptoms that can occur, depending on the type of psoriasis. Nail, inverse, erythrodermic, pustular, guttate and plaque varieties all may result in changes to the skin that can be acute or chronic. Plaque psoriasis symptoms can include:
- Scaly, raised patches of dry skin
- Plaques usually are on elbows, knees, scalp and lower back
- Plaques may be red, brown or purplish, depending on skin color
- Scaling has a white or gray appearance
- Itching or burning sensation
- Dry skin that may crack or bleed
Triggers can cause psoriasis outbreaks. Some possible precursors to psoriasis flare ups can include infections, extreme temperatures, excessive alcohol, skin injuries and certain medications.
Relief from Psoriasis
There is not a cure for psoriasis, but treatments are available. Some types of psoriasis may only be short-lived – guttate primarily affects children after a throat infection and may go dormant in adulthood. However, plaque psoriasis and other types can last a lifetime, going through cycles of outbreaks that can last weeks or months. Treatment plans are designed to stop the overproduction of skin cells while providing relief for symptoms. These may include topical and oral medications, as well as light therapy.
